San Antonio Blind Spot Trucking Accidents

Semi trucks pose a danger to other motorists, largely because of their size and weight compared to passenger vehicles. A leading cause of these crashes is the truck driver’s failure to check blind spots.

If you or a loved one was injured in a truck accident, call the San Antonio truck accident attorney at George Salinas Injury Lawyers to arrange your free, no-obligation consultation. We can discuss your legal rights and options.

What Is a Blind Spot Truck Accident?

A blind spot is an area near a vehicle where a driver cannot see in their mirrors. All vehicles have blind spots, but trucks have much larger blind spots than cars due to their shape and size. A blind spot truck accident occurs when a truck collides with a vehicle in one of its blind spots.

Where Are a Truck’s Blind Spots?

Trucks have large blind spots that extend to the following areas around the truck:

  • 20 feet in front of the truck’s cab
  • 30 feet behind the truck’s trailer
  • About half the length of the trailer in the lane to the left of the truck
  • Directly to the right side of the truck to the two lanes to the right of the truck

These areas are sometimes called “no zones” because they indicate spots near a truck where other motorists cannot be seen. If you cannot see a driver in their mirror, they cannot see you.

Who Is Responsible for Truck Blind Spot Accidents?

The best way to avoid blind spot truck accidents is to stay out of the no zones. However, commercial trucking companies and truck drivers are held to a higher standard of care when operating their vehicles because they are more capable of causing serious damage. Truck drivers know about these dangerous areas. As such, they are required to check them often and avoid changing lanes when another vehicle is occupying the space in their no zones. Trucking companies are required to hire qualified drivers.
